CV / RESUME

RESUME OR CV

What’s the Difference and Which One Do You Need?

When it comes to job applications, two documents often come up: the CV (Curriculum Vitae) and the Resume. While many people use the terms interchangeably, they are not the same. Understanding the differences will help you choose the right one for your career goals and increase your chances of landing an interview.

What is a CV?

A Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a comprehensive document that provides a detailed overview of your academic background, professional experience, skills, and achievements.

  • Length: Typically 2–3 pages (sometimes longer for academic or research fields).

  • Content: Includes education, work history, research, publications, awards, professional affiliations, and detailed descriptions of roles.

  • Use: Commonly required in academic, medical, research, and international job applications (especially in Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia).

Example: If you are applying for a teaching position at a university, you’ll need a CV that outlines your academic qualifications, research work, publications, and conference presentations.

What is a Resume?

A Resume is a concise, tailored document that highlights your skills and experiences relevant to a specific job.

  • Length: 1–2 pages maximum.

  • Content: Focuses on work experience, skills, and achievements directly related to the job you are applying for.

  • Use: Commonly used in corporate, private sector, and professional job applications, especially in the United States and Canada.

Example: If you’re applying for a marketing manager role, your resume should emphasize marketing campaigns you’ve led, measurable results, and leadership skills—without listing unrelated experiences.
